DCSM follows the Carver policy governance model of board self-management that clearly defines the distinct roles of the HOS and BOD. Each BOD member commits to group and self-training in order to become proficient in the use of this governance philosophy. This governance model is then carried out at our meetings following the guidelines set for in the Colorado Sunshine Act for Open Meetings.

DCSM has a working board. While the time commitment varies each year and month based on specific needs, on average a member contributes 8 hours per month. Members have found it very rewarding to contribute their talents to support and help set direction for the school.
BOD members commit to attending all regular meetings, special meetings scheduled on an as needed basis, participation in standing committees and the time needed to prepare for these duties.
All regular meetings are held at the school and are open for any member of our community to attend all or part of the meeting. Each July, the BOD posts its regular meeting schedule for the entire year; typically these meetings occur in the evening on the 4th Monday of each month and last approximately 4 hours. The schedule can be found on the DCSM website and it is posted at the main door of the school. We’d love to see you!
The DCSM BOD is composed of 7 voting members plus the HOS, who sits as an ex-officio, non-voting member. All elected positions are un-paid, volunteer roles.
Five of the board positions are designated for parents of enrolled students and two are reserved for community members without children in the school, should this type of member be willing to serve during an election cycle.
Each member serves for a two-year term. Term expirations are staggered, to ensure stability during transitions.
Board elections are held during the annual meeting of the members each May and newly elected BOD members begin their term at the July regular meeting of the board.
The BOD elects its officers at the July meeting. There are four officer positions elected each year: Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer.
All actions of the board are collective and only decisions of the board, acting as a body, are binding. The officer roles lead and administer the work of the BOD and communicate actions of the board as appropriate.
